The Story
In 2003 Orang, a doctor working in Accident and Emergency, realised that most physicians and clinicians did not clean their stethoscopes, and became aware that this can be a source of cross-contamination. He then discussed this with his brother Arjang, who was an electronic engineer involved in research and development. A year later and after much exploratory discussions, they decided to make this a reality.
It seemed that covering the stethoscope head with a membrane would present a better solution than trying to clean the stethoscope diaphragm, but there were two problems.
The first is that although the stethoscope would remain clean, the membrane would become contaminated after one or more contact with patients. The second was that clinicians always seem to be in a rush and do not have time to apply a cover to the stethoscope by hand.
The Solution
The solution to the first problem was easy: make the membranes cheap and disposable. The solution to the second problem seemed easy: make a dispenser that would instantly snap a cover to the stethoscope head once the stethoscope was offered to it. This seemed a bigger technical challenge, but nature came to the rescue!
The Principle: A Monkey Trap!
A monkey sees a jar of cookies and puts his hand in to grab one, but his hand is turned into a fist and he cannot remove it from the jar. So in order to remove his hand he has to let go of the cookie!
The StetPro principle is based on the same idea: The membrane has an elastic O-ring that is stretched over a rigid plastic ring, and in this case has a larger diameter than the opening of the dispenser head. However, when the O-ring is slipped off the plastic ring and on to the stethoscope head, its diameter is reduced and it can escape from the dispenser.

The Smile Factor
After some prototypes were made, Orang and Arjang travelled far and wide to visit clinicians and demonstrate the product. They soon realised a very interesting phenomenon which they called the smile factor. When a clinician was asked to place a stethoscope head into the dispenser and they heard and felt a tactile ‘click’, they removed the stethoscope and noticed that there was not magically a membrane on the stethoscope. This was inevitably followed by a wide smile of amazement!
